What are Art Docents? Art Docents are classroom volunteers (parents or community members) who teach art lessons to elementary classes. For parents, it is a great way to get involved in your child’s classroom, meet their friends, inspire a love of art and help give our amazing teachers a little breather (while staying in the classroom). Typically, it works best to have a lead docent to teach the lesson and one or two assistants to help manage supplies, help kids through the process and help clean up.

The Lake Washington Schools Foundation funded the development of elementary art lessons in partnership with LWSD Art Docents. Art Docents can now use these resources to teach lessons to all elementary grades and build upon the fundamentals each year. The new Lake Washington School District elementary art curriculum Deep Space Sparkle the teachers lead, and the elementary art docent program, complement each other.

Art docents have liberties to use the lessons provided or create their own if they feel inspired to do so. All creativity is welcome in our school!

All supplies are purchased by Thoreau’s PTA and are stored at school in the flex room. Art docents can check out the key at the front office to access the supply room. If supplies are running low, please email Darcy Ballew darcyrobin@yahoo.com and they will be restocked as soon as possible!

It is important to have an open line of communication with the teacher of the class you will be art docent for. It usually works best to establish a consistent day and time each month (i.e.: first Thursday of the month from 1-2pm) for planning purposes. Remember to allow time for prep and clean up!

Darcy Ballew is the Art Docent coordinator and will be hosting two information sessions. At these sessions she will give a tour of the flex room, explore the online lessons, and answer questions. Please RSVP to darcyrobin@yahoo.com. If you are unable to make either time, please email and she will try to accommodate you.

Information Sessions for Art Docent Volunteers:

Monday 9/23/2019 9:20 am- 10:20 am and Tuesday 9/24/2019 2:50-3:50 pm. Meet Darcy outside of the main entrance and we will all enter together.

Typically, lessons do not start until October as teachers like the first month to get routines established in their classrooms. Please remember that we are all working together to make a creative and welcome learning environment for the kids! Encouraging creativity is top priority, but we are also trying hard to be respectful of teachers, their classroom rules and not making more work for them. Some teachers also appreciate if docents can assist them with Deep Space Sparkle lessons. They often need help with supply management and just another set of hands in the classroom. Other teachers often ask docents to help them with seasonal projects in the class or crafts for classroom parties. These additional jobs vary by teacher and are all optional.
